Nelson began his career in the financial industry in 1995, and obtained his Certified Financial Planner designation in 1998. He has resided on the Central Coast since 1993 and in North County since 2001. Nelson and his wife, Colleen, have been married since 1994 and have two children.

Nelson has volunteered with many organizations as a board member, sponsor, assistant coach, head coach, and referee. These include Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast; Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County; Atascadero Youth Soccer Association; Atascadero AYSO; Atascadero Little League; Atascadero Girls Softball; Atascadero Babe Ruth; and Atascadero Youth Basketball. Nelson and Colleen have also donated to Colony Park Community Center and Alvord Field, and are founding donors of the Atascadero Library and Atascadero Printery Foundation.

Colleen is the Branch Operations Manager and is responsible for the communication of disclosure documents, account paperwork, and other behind-the scenes tasks.
